Moab, UT to Gateway, CO

“Pavement and dirt roads. Outstanding views throughout the ride. “

Moab to Gateway

Google Maps

This ride is not a ride for a street bike. Some sections where the road may be rutted, muddy, and difficult if you don’t have an adventure type bike. My KLR was the right choice, even with my 70/30 Shinko 705s.

Beginning in Moab, ride to Castle Valley. The road is reasonably well marked, though it deteriorates 2/3s of the way through, and you may question whether or not you missed a turn. There are old signs, hand-painted, that you will run into along the road. The ride starts in Moab. You take a right on UT-128. Continue for about 15 miles and take a right on La Sal Loop Rd. Google calls this road the Delores Triangle Safari Road. I didn’t see any elephants but don’t give up hope. Follow the signs for the rest of the way. You will get outstanding views. Take the time to stop at Bull Canyon Overlook. The last bit of road down to Gateway is reminiscent of the red rock formations you left behind in Moab. The road gets a little tighter, and the descent brings steeper inclines. Once down, you will want to stop and perhaps take a swim if the weather is right.

Greg Mace Peak, East Bowl – Ashcroft, CO

Greg Mace Peak

“An accessable and worthy Spring ski destination.”

Mace Peak, East Bowl

Mace Peak is just south of Ashcroft, Colorado. The approach is very easy. Either park at Toklat, at the winter closure, or at the Pearl Pass Parking in the Spring.

Skin, or walk as we had to, for a couple of miles. Cross the river and head up the wide avalanche chute. Spring snow required that we boot up. Once in the bowl, choose your ascent route. The left was easier. Choose your descent route or just do laps. It is steep enough that any danger needs to be attended to properly.
